![]() I could fill chapters describing my wanderings through this Age and my interactions with its inhabitants, but that's best saved for another day. Unlike most Myst games, you'll regulary meet various characters throughout Serenia. Despite its beauty, however, I found myself nearly unable to make my way through this Age, even with a detailed guide provided by Atrus. ![]() How could Atrus have been so blind?ġ05.7.9 | After a brief return to Tomahna, the final Age on my journey was Serenia, a bright, spiritual Age with blue skies and clear waters. When combined with the multiple visions I'd been seeing courtesy of Yeesha's amulet, a plot began to come into view I only hoped I could reach Yeesha in time. As I searched the prison Ages, I came across several journals from each of the brothers, which helped explain the mindset of the brothers over their years of imprisonment, and answered several questions about the family's history. Spire is a dark, onimous Age, set among the clouds.Įventually, the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. It didn't help my cause that important bits of information seemed to be hidden in every corner major portions of my time in Spire turned into a treasure hunt where I'd search every inch of the land looking for one bit of information that would somehow bring the mystery into sharper view. ![]() As in Haven, my travels through this Age were dominated by odd gadgets - it often took longer to figure out what a device actually did and how it worked than to actually use it. An Age of jagged rock piercing the clouds, this Age shrouded in eternal night radiated evil and darkness from every corner. Clearly, Achenar had a lot of time on his hands to create such elaborate traps, considering he was the only person trapped in this prison.Īrticles index index.html output pc undisqus.bash articles index index.html output pc undisqus.bash articles index index.html output pc undisqus.bash articles index index.html output pc undisqus.bash articles index index.html output pc undisqus.bash articles index index.html output pc undisqus.bashġ05.7.6 | My next stop was Spire, the prison Age of Sirrus. I was, after all, on a mission.Īs it turned out, I would get my opportunity to explore every inch of this Age, as it was loaded with one obstacle after another, from a huge ship standing in the water at a seemingly impossible angle, to a locking mechanism that required an in-depth understanding of the Age's wildlife. I was so taken aback by the beauty of the Age that I had to fight the urge to simply wander around and soak it all in. This Age was part rocky beachhead and part lush, green jungle, teeming with strange, wild animals. Myst has also spawned several sequels, a series of novels, and was rumored to be adapted into a film.105.7.4 | My first stop was the prison Age of Haven, jail of Achenar, the older of the two siblings. Originally released for Macintosh and PC, Myst was eventually remade for Saturn, Jaguar CD, 3DO, CD-i, PlayStation, AmigaOS, PSP, Nintendo DS and iPhone. However, Myst proved to be appealing enough that users were willing to upgrade their hardware to play the game. At a time when floppy disks were the standard, this was considered a risky move. This made Myst one of the first computer video games to be released only on CD-ROM. Due to the technical requirements of the game, it could not be released on floppy disk. Developers at Cyan created a highly detailed world that could be explored from every angle. The use of QuickTime video helped create a visually realistic world.įor the time period, Myst was visually remarkable. Rather than animating characters, the developers filmed mini-movies with real actors which would be activated when triggered by the player. Each of these characters appears trapped inside magical books and they provided insight into the game's lore. Aside from the player, the game contains only three characters: brothers Sirrus and Achenar, and their father Atrus. Myst stood apart from other adventure games by containing very little dialog. Scattered around the island are puzzles that the player must solve in order to return home. Upon arriving on the island, little information is given on how to proceed and, instead, the player is given the freedom to explore the island however he wishes. In this point-and-click adventure game, players assume the role of a nameless and faceless character referred to as "The Stranger." Cyan deliberately gave little information about This character because they wanted players to insert themselves into the role of The Stranger.Īfter discovering a magical book, known in the game as "linking books," The Stranger is transported to a mysterious island called Myst. Created in 1993 by brothers Robyn and Rand Miller through their company Cyan, Myst is one of the best-selling video games of all time.
